The long, slow but inevitable march to winter has begun in the plant community. The growing season for Cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) has come to an end. The tree canopy is beginning to close in, shading the forest floor. The leaves are yellowing; the plant is entering dormancy. It will sleep for the next eleven months. It is being joined by Dutchman’s Breeches nearby, also yellowing, its seeds barely mature. Meanwhile, the trillium blossoms are beginning to show their age.
