Bee in Gentian

Closed Gentian Open

There are some that dismiss a dedicated macro lens. Oh, they say, you’ll take pictures of a few bugs and a few flowers, then it will sit in your bag. Personally, I can’t get enough of macro photography. I do get in a rut from time to time, when I realize I’ve already photographed this bug or that flower a dozen times. But the natural world is full of endless possibilities at every size. This macro shot of a bumblebee entering a closed gentian (Gentiana andrewsii) flower takes my breath away. The bokeh, sharpness of the hairs on the bee,  complementary colors, action–it has it all. And it can only have been done with a macro lens. It makes you want to go back out again as soon as you can to see what the next great capture will be. The camera was none other than the usual Nikon D90; the lens was the great value sleeper macro lens, the Micro-Nikkor 60mm AF f/2.8.
