Great Spangled Fritillary on Aster

Fritillary 3D

A great spangled fritillary butterfly nectars on an aster, possibly New England aster. I played with the blur and sharpen brushes in Aperture. Image taken with a Tokina 11-16mm ultra wide angle lens on a Nikon D90. Not a very good macro lens, of course. I’m only a foot away from the butterfly. This image is cropped. So, a bit difficult to compose the butterfly into something interesting. However, the fritillary did respond well to sharpening, so I decided to go all the way and blur the rest of the photograph. Gives the fritillary kind of a 3-D effect, surprisingly. I’ve been doing a lot of insects and flowers lately. Getting a bit repetitive, but they’ll all be gone shortly like it or not.
