Passing Front

Passing Front

At the end of a long, rainy day, the front passes just as the last light of sunset fades. And in other news, there sure are a lot of wires in this neighborhood. Taken with Nikon D90 and 18-55mm AF-S VR kit lens. I like this kit lens for many things, but not photography in the dark. It has no distance scale printed on the lens. When photographing in the dark where the auto-focus won’t work, the trick is to pre-focus using the scale on the lens. I especially use this trick for star photography by setting the focus on infinity. Many lenses actually focus past infinity, including this one, so you just can’t just run the focus out to the stopping point by feel; you have to see the scale. No scale means you have to fuss around a good bit more to get a decent shot. The manual focus on this lens is very floppy, too, when the auto-focus is not engaged, and easily slips out on you. I only bring this up because I had a better shot planned that I just could not pull off before the moment passed; the lens just was not cooperating. Yes, it’s the one that got away, and it was huge!
