Purple Crocus

Purple Crocus

Color! Even though the day turned cloudy, I’m grateful for some spring color. The yellow crocuses from last week have been joined by purple and white today. A little sunshine would have been helpful for a classic shot. But, no sunshine today, so I went for low angle and some deeper, saturated color. In Aperture the main adjustment was using the Color brick to emphasize the purple color range. The sky is providing backlight to the translucent petals. I like making images that pick up the light passing through the petals. It is not the usual view. It was starting to rain, so a few drops are visible on the petals. I wanted a wider view as opposed to a macro. I wanted to pick up the context of these crocuses, mainly the other crocuses in the background.

The was taken with a Nikon D90 and the tried-and-true Nikon 18-55mm AF-S VR DX. ISO 1600, f/8, 1/250 sec. Exposure value was up one full stop, to compensate for the strong backlight; any more tended to wash out the petal color. We are at 46mm focal length. I set the camera on the ground to take the picture.

I see around the web that crocuses are quite popular on photo blogs right now. We are all anxious for spring!
